World Earth Day marks April 22 every year (Monday in 2024) and is a day to raise awareness of the environmental issues facing our planet. It is an opportunity to assess our position in a battle for sustainable living on this planet.
The theme of Earth Day 2024, entitled “The planet versus plastic”, aims to raise awareness of the effects of plastic pollution on human health and the planet. This year’s focus on plastics is ahead of the adoption of a historic United Nations treaty that will end plastic pollution, which is expected to be agreed by the end of 2024.
When did Earth Day start
Senator Gaylord Nelson began World Earth Day in 1970, after seeing environmental damage from the 1969 Santa Barbara, California, oil spill. The event helped increase community support for the establishment of the EPA to address environmental issues, and its has since contributed to the passage of several environmental laws in the United States.
Actions related to Earth Day
-Advocacy: Supporters encourage individuals, organizations, and Governments to meet to discuss environmental issues. They build lifestyle changes such as composting or recycling electronic waste.
Climate change: raising awareness about climate change, human contribution to those changes, and opportunities to slow down the phenomenon.
-Education: Provide Earth Day educational programs for teachers, students, and the general public to familiarize them with resources and solutions to create a healthier and more sustainable planet.
-Food and agriculture: raising awareness of some agricultural practices, such as the use of chemical pesticides, that contribute to environmental degradation and greater support for organic, local, and sustainable agricultural techniques.
-Recycling and waste reduction: raising awareness about reducing the amount of waste people produce, and increasing the amount we recycle and reuse.
Activities to contribute to Earth Day
There are many activities and ways to contribute to and celebrate Earth Day, including:
-Educate yourself about the factors leading to climate change and how to reduce them, and then spread awareness in your surroundings and society.
-Planting trees in government facilities or your garden, trees are powerful tools to combat climate change and pollinators are essential for biodiversity.
-Reduce your plastic consumption and invite your friends to reduce its use. Plastic pollution is a major environmental problem that harms wildlife and humans.
-Donate to campaigns that support the environmental movement.
-Volunteer at a cleaning event in your city.
